He died in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed. On 6 August 2011 a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down in Afghanistan. 30 American servicemen were killed, including 17 Navy SEALs. The crash occurred in Saydabad District, Wardak Province after the Chinook was struck by an RPG. They were on a QRF mission to assist members of the 75th Ranger Regiment engaged in a fierce firefight.

He was survived by his parents; his fiancé; his brother; his two sisters; his niece; his grandmother; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Charles W Strange Sr and William D. Weney; and a grandmother, Rosemary F Weney.
