Harry Smithson Funeral Monday
Killed By Bomb In Germany In 1944

Funeral services for Harry W. Smithson, 21-year-old technician in the Signal corps who was killed by a bomb in Germany in 1944, will be held at the First Methodist Church on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, according to plans made here today by the war victim's mothers, Mrs. Myra McFarland of South Main Street. The body of the young soldier, killed while serving with Third Armored Division, is expected to arrive in Hopkinsville around 9 o'clock Monday morning and will be at Keightley Funeral Home until ___ for the services at the church. The young man's body, buried for the past three years at Henri Chapelle Cemetery in Belgium, reached the United States in October. It was sent here from the Memphis depot under an army escort. Funeral services will be in charge of Dr. A. C. Johnson, pastor of the First Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member. Burial will be at Riverside and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will have charge of special military rites there. Mrs. McFarland asked today that all members of her son's graduating class at Hopkinsville High School, the class of 1942, consider themselves as honorary pall bearers for the services. Young Smithson was killed at Aachen, Germany, on Nov. 5, 1944. He was in a small building working on a radio when the bomb hit the structure. He had been in the signal corps since June, 1942, going to Lexington at that time to start his study of radio. In addition to his mother, the young soldier is survived by his step-father, A. O. McFarland, and a brother, Ben G. Smithson, now a student at the University of Kentucky. (Kentucky New Era, Hopkinsville, KY, Saturday Afternoon, Nov. 8, 1947, p. 1, Col. 5)
