Funeral services for Mr. Walter E. Nickerson, 73, of May Road, Potsdam, head of the automobile sales agency of
Walter E. Nickerson & Son, Potsdam, were held today (Monday, December 23, 1974) at 2 p.m. at the Seymour Funeral
Home with the Rev. William Caldwell of the Potsdam United Methodist Church officiating.
Mr. Nickerson died Friday, December 20 at the Potsdam Unit, Central St. Lawrence Health Services. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Leta Burwell Nickerson; two sons, Walter B. Nickerson of Potsdam and Francis Nickerson of Pittsfield, Mass.; five grandchildren; four brothers, Harry, Fred and Edward Nickerson, all of Waddington and Charles Nickerson of Massena.
He was born in Waddington June 23, 1901, a son of Elwin and Martha Bradley Nickerson. He attended Waddington
Schools and then in 1924 began working as an automobile salesman. He worked for Fay and Martin in Waddington and later when the firm moved to Massena. In 1933 he began working as a salesman for Ralph W. Johns Chevrolet Agency and he continued there until World War II. Due to the difficulty of securing automobiles to sell during the war years, Mr. Nickerson and other members of Johns Agency Sales Staff went to work for the Navy Department inspecting material at Massena Operations, Alcoa. When the son, Walter B. Nickerson, was discharged from Navy service in 1945, the father and son formed the partnership known as W.E. Nickerson & Son, now Potsdam's oldest automobile dealers and among the oldest in the county.
Mr. Nickerson was a past master of Waddington Lodge 393, F. and A.M., Past High Priest of St. Lawrence Lodge
Chapter 24, Royal Arch Masons, Past Commander of St. Lawrence Commandery 28, K.T. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Norwood, the Central City Consistory in Syracuse, and Media Temple, Shrine. He served as District Deputy Grand Master of the Second St. Lawrence District, F. and A.M., in 1956-57. For several years he was a member of the Grand Lodge Fellowship Committee.
Mr. Nickerson and Miss Leta Burwell were married August 2,1924, in Canton. She is a native of Canton. He was a member of the Potsdam United Methodist Church.
Burial was in Bayside Cemetery.
