U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Savannah, Georgia, in 1797. He was appointed United States District Attorney in 1804, Mayor of Savannah, in 1812, alderman of Savannah, in 1814 and during the War of 1812, served in the Savannah Heavy Artillery. He was solicitor general of Georgia State, collector of customs, (1849-50), a member Georgia State House of Representatives and a member of Georgia State Senate. He was appointed as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William H. Crawford and served from April 8, 1813, until November 6, 1813. After leaving in the Senate, he was one of the founder-president of the State Bank of Georgia, (1816-43) and run his plantation until his death at age 75.
