One of 12 airmen killed in the crash of their B-24D bomber in the South Pacific. Due to the nature of the recovery of the remains, several burials in different locations were afforded a number of the airmen, as well as a common burial in a single casket in Arlington National Cemetery. People are urged to search Find-a-Grave for the other, separate burials.

Airmen lost in the crash of B-24D 42-40918, "Shack Rat," of the 5th Air Force, 90th Bombardment Group, 320th Bombardment Squadron, were:

1st Lt. Jack E. Volz

2nd Lt. Regis E. Dietz

2nd Lt. Edward J. Lake

2nd Lt. Martin P. Murray

2nd Lt. William J. Shryock

Tech. Sgt. Robert S. Wren

Tech. Sgt. Hollis R. Smith

Staff Sgt. Berthold A. Chastain

Staff Sgt. Clyde L. Green

Staff Sgt. Frederick E. Harris

Staff Sgt. Claude A. Ray

Staff Sgt. Claude G. Tyler

Shryock, Green and Harris were also individually identified and were interred individually the same day as the group.
