Julian was one of those individuals whose life was marred by repeated tragedy and misfortune through no fault of her own. Throughout all these misfortunes Julian persevered and successfully raised her five children as a single parent.

Julian was the 6th of 7 children of Henry Barton (1785-1853) and his wife Sarah (Ensley) Barton. Because her parents were older by the time she was born she lost them at an earlier age in her life.

At 17 years of age, Julian fell for a much older and reputedly very handsome Dennis Welch, whose uncle Dennis Daniels, whom he was named after, was Sheriff of Fulton County, Pennsylvania. Younger Dennis, in his mid- twenties, still lived at the homestead of his parents Zadock Welch and Elizabeth (Daniels) Welch in East Providence Township in Bedford County. Overwhelmed by Dennis's good looks and charisma Julian married him. Dennis's parents were thrilled by the marriage. Julian and Dennis lived their early marriage years with her in-laws. They show up still living there in the 1850 census, five years after their marriage and after their first two daughters were born.

Dennis Welch proved to be emotionally and mentally unstable, probably bi-polar, which diagnosis did not exist back then. He also developed a serious drinking problem. These problems became increasingly alarming, so much so that Dennis abandoned his family and eventually wound up in the state of Michigan. He died in Michigan sometime after 1860. Julian was left as a single mother with five children. With the passages of her in-laws this left Julian with no familial support.

Julian later married Gideon Martin. He would die several years later leaving her a widow once again. There were no children from this union.

In her later middle-age years Julian would come to live with her only son Henry Welch and his wife Maria and their large family of 7 daughters and 2 sons. Julian's son Henry would die at the early age of 41. This was another huge heartbreak for Julian. Her daughter-in-law would remarry.

Julian in old age found a peaceful existence in the home of her eldest daughter Nancy (Welch) Whitfield where she would live until she died.

This contributor/account manager is a direct descendant of Julian's brother-in-law Charles S. Welch whose daughter Jennie (Welch) Himes, great-grandmother of this contributor, was a first cousin to Julian's five children.
