Passing Away
Mrs. Ellen A. Spalding, nee Oakman, aged 85, widow of Capt. Wm. Spalding, died June 6, following an illness which dated from Memorial Day, at which time she took to her bed. She came to Brainerd with her husband, on November 1, 1871. She was born at Whitehall, N. Y., October 17, 1831 and was married at Poultney, Vermont, on March 31, 1853.
Capt. Spalding ran the first train on the Northern Pacific railway, serving as conductor and later had charge of construction work and then became claim agent. He died 25 years ago on June 10.
Mrs. Spalding was a devout member of the Episcopal church, a woman kindly, lovable, cheerful and charitable. Her daughter died 15 years ago. Her only son is Henry Spalding of Brainerd, widely known in this section and at one time sheriff of Crow Wing county and later prominent in business life and opened the Spalding hotel in Crosby when the town was first founded. The deceased has a sister living at Poultney, Vermont. Mrs. Spalding loved Brainerd and the neighborhood where she made her home, living in the same house where she died, for 45 years.
The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Epsicopal church, Rev. Stacey officiating. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 07 June 1916, p. 3, c. 1)
