Librarian of Congress. Having graduated from Columbia University in 1929, he was the first graduate of a library school to hold the position of Librarian of Congress. The eleventh Librarian of Congress, he was appointed by President Eisenhower and served from 1954 to 1974. He took the oath of office using the Library's 1782 Aiken Bible, the first complete Bible printed in English in the independent United States. (bio by: Garver Graver)
