The only Revoluntionary War soldier proven buried in Oregon. Willaim Cannon was a Private in the 4th Regiment of Artillery, Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Line. In 1811 he headed west to Oregon with the expedition of the John Jacob Astor Fur Company, only the second attempt to cross the continent, and only 7 years after Lewis and Clark. William Cannon was one of 53 men who voted for a provisional government for Oregon under the United States (vs. continuing British rule) at a meeting at Champoeg on May 2, 1843.
