William Edward Bailey served for the Union during the Civil War as a private in the Maine 1st Cavalry Regiment. He was taken prisoner and confined to the notorious prison at Andersonville in Georgia.
Surviving this, he returned to Bradford, where he married his wife, Nancy E. Hogan, on 15 March 1868. For many years he owned and operated a general store in Bradford, Maine.
