U.S. Congressman. Successful in mercantile pursuits, he entered politics, was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1830-31, 33-36) and served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1841. In 1845, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth Congress served till 1847 and reelected to the Thirty-second Congress, serving until his death.
