Devon, England
Death: Jul. 18, 2011
Helmand, Afghanistan

Corporal
B Company
1st Battalion
The Rifles
British Army

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Cpl Palin was killed by an improvised explosive device while on foot patrol near Jamal Kalay in the Nahr-e Saraj (South) district of Helmand province. He was guiding a patrol to clear and recover a cache of improvised explosive device components discovered the previous evening.

Aged 32, he was from Plymouth and enlisted in 1996, joining the 1st Battalion the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment. He served in Northern Ireland and Iraq, the latter as a mortar fire controller. After a posting as an instructor training recruits at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, he deployed to Afghanistan in April 2011. He was the second-in-command of a twelve-man team based at Checkpoint Jeker. Described as a first-rate soldier and leader, he was highly respected by all ranks. Called "Maldoon" by his friends, he was one of the most well-liked and helpful blokes in the battalion as well as the king of banter. He had a passion for football, played for the battalion team and ardently supported Tottenham Hotspur.

Cpl Palin leaves behind his wife Carla and their young son Lennon, his father Paul, brother Matthew and sister Louise, along with other relatives and friends. The family said, "Mark was unique, one in a million. He was loved deeply by all his family and friends. He was a devoted family man who adored his son and was so looking forward to the birth of his daughter. He will be deeply missed by all his family, friends and everyone who knew him."

Funeral with full military honours was held on August 5, 2011 at St Andrew's Church, Royal Parade, Plymouth.
