The son of Willis and Dora Steinberger, Joesph was born Aug. 24, 1881, in north Jasper County. He was educated in rural schools and, after moving to Marshalltown with his parents at the age of 10, in Marshalltown schools. He worked on farms in the Baxter community.
Joseph and Mary Sophia Petermeier were married June 12, 1901, in Marshalltown. After their marriage Joseph farmed near Baxter until retiring in November 1951 and moving to Baxter. They were members of the Lutheran Church.
Joseph died Thursday, April 4, 1963, at the Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton where he had been a patient for a week.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday April 6, at the Boyd Nickell Funeral Home in Baxter. The Rev. Robert H. Nichel, pastor of the Grace Lutheran Church in Newton conducted the services. Burial was in Restland Cemetery in Baxter.
Joseph was survived by Mary Sophia and their two sons, James and Robert, both of Newton; and four daughters, Vernie (Mrs. Charles) Tupper of Grundy Center; Dorothy (Mrs. Fred) Frahm of Newton; Charlotte Johnson of Baxter; and Beulah (Mrs. Chester) Ghent of Baxter; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Iva.
