Bill Baker took part in a practice session for a WWGN race at Sears Point International Raceway (now called Infineon Raceway). Immediately after practice he stepped out of his Buick and collapsed, apparently being the victim of a heart attack. Bill was taken to the Novato Community Hospital in Novato, California, where he died.
