U.S. Congressman. Born into slavery, he was taken at age five with his mother to Alabama in 1830, as part of the forced migration of the internal slave trade. There obtained an education and engaged in mercantile pursuits. Entering politics, he was tax collector of Dallas County, in 1867 and served on the Selma City Council in 1869. In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress, serving until 1873. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1880 and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
