Pauline (Short) Berry, 83, of McAlester, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at McAlester Regional Health Center. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dorsey Cemetery, northwest of McAlester, with the Rev. Gerald Kerns officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Born Oct. 28, 1919, in Stuart, she was the daughter of George William and Sara Gray Short. She was a lifelong resident of the McAlester area and was of the Baptist faith. She was a nurse at Saint Mary's Hospital and also McAlester General Hospital for many years until becoming the owner and operator of the East Gate Nursing Home, where she worked until retirement. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James and Helen Short, of McAlester; five daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Bob Maynard, Sara and Allen Hicks, Ann Grippando and Gary Zachary, Pat and Bill Scott and Della and Emanuel Brown, all of McAlester, Also, three sisters, Rosie White, Independence, Mo. and Edith Pike and Stella Duckworth, both of McAlester; 28 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren. And, two sisters-in-law, Ollie Short, of Alderson, and Mary Small, of McAlester; numerous nieces and nephews; a special niece, Della Blevins and a special friend, Charles Blevins, of McAlester. Pallbearers will be Monty Scott, Bobby Scott, Junior Short, Charlie Brown, Wesley Brown and DeWayne Maynard. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Hicks, Frank Maynard, Mike Swindle and Charles Leeper. She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Sara Short; two husbands, Willie Elemer Smith and Fred T. Berry; a son, William Wesley Smith; five brothers; five sisters; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.
