Mathematician. Born in Paris France, he was a mechanical engineer and physicist who discovered the Coriolis Effect in 1835. The Coriolis showed that the laws of motion could be used in a rotating frame of reference that governs the movements of winds in the atmosphere and currents in the ocean. He also found that relative motions have numerous applications, particularly in the case of motion on the surface of the Earth. As a Professor of mechanics at several noted French universities, his Coriolis formula was the first to derive formulas expressing kinetic energy and mechanical work. He died at age 51 in Paris, France and his name is one of the only 72 inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.
