Ray G. Beesley

Ray G. Beesley, 89, died Sunday, June 16, 2002. Ray was born April 8, 1913, in Gove County, Kansas, to John and Nellie (Gorham) Beesley.

Ray attended the Missouri Flats rural Gove County School and graduated from Gove County High School. He attended Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University.

On May 1, 1942, Ray married Lora Johnson in Lewis, Kansas. Lora died on December 15, 1981. On January 29, 1983, Ray married Bernita Burk Sramek at St. Johns Church in Atwood, Kansas.

Ray joined the United States Navy on September 8, 1942. he served his country during World War II as an Aviation Chief Radio Technician, and was honorably discharged on August 31, 1945.

He was a farmer and a stockman who served as a director for the State Farm Bureau for ten years from 1970 to 1980. Ray was an innovator in modern agriculture, one of the pioneers of no-til farming and milo producing in Gove County. During his lifetime, Ray experienced farming with a horse and plow taking two weeks to complete a quarter section and farming with a four-wheel-drive tractor and sweeps, allowing him to complete the same job in 4 hours.

Ray was an active member of his community, serving on the county board of directors for Farm Bureau and ASCS. He was a former school board member for the Missouri Flats school. Ray was also a member of the American Legion, the Odd Fellows and the Kansas Livestock Association. Ray served as president of the Quinter Golf Association during their drive to put in the new greens. A former member of the Gove United Methodist Church, Ray later joined the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Bernita, of the home; three sons: Roger Beesley and his wife Virginia, of Quinter; Donald, Philip and his wife Paula, all of Gove; nine grandchildren; a brother James Beesley of Dighton; two sisters, Grace Coberly of Hays and Mary Weckel of Wichita; a step-son, Michael Sramek and his wife Carold of McDonald, kansas, and two step-daughters, Sharon Schreiner and her husband, Gene, of Overland Park, and Debby miller of Salem, NM; 11 step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred, and three sisters, Alice Beesley, Nancy Heard, and Edith Homolka.

Services were Wednesday June 19 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, KS. Burial was in the Gove Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Heart Assn., the Cancer Assn., or the Quinter Golf Assn.
