Surgeon. Born Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau, in Tours, France, he was a skilled surgeon and renowned for his knowledge of surgical anatomy. In 1823, he obtained his doctorate in Paris, where he subsequently worked as a hospital surgeon. In 1833, he was appointed the chair of clinical surgery in France, which was a position he maintained until his death. Through the course of his career, he is credited with providing the first accurate description of leukemia, developed a wrapping used to immobilize the arm to the chest wall known as a Velpeau bandage, plus was the author of over 340 titles on surgery and surgical anatomy. He died in Paris, France at the age of 72.
