Doris M. (Zike) Wheeler (1919 - 2011)
Doris Marie Wheeler, 91, Vallonia, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2011, at Hoosier Christian Village. She had been ill for four months.
Mrs. Wheeler was a member of Vallonia Christian Church. She was the owner of the Bluebird Café in Vallonia for 68 years. She enjoyed watching any kind of basketball game and loved to play bingo. She had been a lifelong resident of Jackson County.
Born Dec. 8, 1919, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Glenn and Pearl Montel Zike, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Daniel Wheeler on Jan. 13, 1937, in Salem, and he preceded her in death on July 23, 1981.
Survivors include her children, Randall (Jeannie) Wheeler, Columbus, Carolyn (Jim) Davers, Medora, Ronald (Rita) Wheeler, Seymour, Rosie (Sam) Grider, Vallonia, Rita (Tom) Frazier, Dexter, Mo., Gary Wheeler, Vallonia, and Dana (Bo) Sterling, Brownstown; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lewis, Carl, Warren Glenn and Joe Zike; two sisters, Mildred Covert and Helen Peppers; and two grandchildren.
The Rev. Chris Criminger and the Rev. Johnny Johnson will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home, Vallonia. Burial will take place at Vallonia Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Vallonia Christian Church or to the Joe Jackson Hotel.
