Robert O Bechtel, son of Harvey S Bechtel & his wife Grace Myrtle Melvin Bechtel

Robert O Bechtel, 54, vice president of the Exchange State Bank, died unexpectedly of a heart seizure Friday, March 16, in the Elkhart General Hospital.

Mr Bechtel, who had been under a doctor’s care had gone to an Elkhart clinic for a checkup. Dale Yoder accompanied him. Mr Bechtel suffered an attack while at the clinic and was given oxygen there, then taken to the hospital, where he died at 10:30 am.

The grandson of Jeremiah Bechtel, who founded the bank in 1890. Mr Bechtel virtually grew up in the business. His father, Harve S Bechtel, has been president of the firm since 1901, and the deceased had been associated with it for 32 years. Through his long association with the bank, his real estate and other business interests. He made a wide acquaintanceship and was active in many civic enterprises in the community.

Born in Wakarusa Oct 10, 1907, he was the son of Harve S and Grace (Melvin)Bechtel. The mother died some years ago.

He was graduated in 1925 from Wakarusa High School and also attended Michigan State University. He later graduated from the South Bend College of Commerce and the American Institute of Banking.

His marriage to Evelyn Wehrly of Nappanee took place Oct 20, 1934. She survives with their two daughters [Mrs Charles (Peggy) Bradley of Centerville, OH, and Mrs Gene (Jane) Hess of Hopkinsville, KY], the father and three grandchildren.

Mr Bechtel worked one year at the First Bank and Trust Co, in South Bend before beginning his banking career here in 1929.

He was a member of the First Christian Church and a past president of the North Indiana Artist Association, Inc. He spent much of his free time with paint brush and canvas.

The funeral was held at 3 pm Monday in the Lienhart Funeral Home. The Rev Arthur Friesen, pastor of the local Methodist Church, and the Rev William Helmach, pastor of the Nappanee Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial was in Olive cemetery.

The Exchange State Bank was closed Monday and other wakarusa business firms were closed during the funeral.
