Frank Marvin Hetrick, 78, a resident of Annapolis for five years and previously of Glenn Dale for 13 years, died June 5 in Baltimore. He was born Aug. 28, 1932, in York, PA, and received his B.S. degree from Michigan State University in 1954. He later received his M.S. degree in 1960 and Ph.D. degree in 1962 from the University of Maryland. He served in the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant, then as Captain in the Army Reserves before retiring. Dr. Hetrick was a Microbiology professor at the University of Maryland. He was granted the Distinguished Scholar/Teacher Award and was a Professor Emeritus. He also received the S.F. Snieszko Distinguished Service Award from the American Fisheries Society for his research for the advancement of fish disease control. He was a member of Good Samaritan since 1982, and had been a member of Ascension Lutheran and Hope Lutheran prior to that. Since 2005, he had also been a member of the congregation of the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel. A dedicated family man, Dr. Hetrick loved baseball, hockey and listening to classical music. He was also an avid runner, including a stretch of 26 years of running every day. He worked as a volunteer for many years and many organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, FISH (Friends in Service to Humanity), CARE at Heritage Harbour, the Lutheran Mission in Annapolis and the Welcome Home GIs at BWI program. He is survived by his wife, whom he married June 19, 1954; two sons and daughters in law, three daughters and a son in law, 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 12 at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 13 at the Naval Academy Chapel - enter at Gate 8. A Celebration of Life service will follow from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Officer's Club adjacent to Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, 801 Roeder Road, Suite 100, Silver Spring, MD 20910.
