Mercedes Margaret Rodenwald, 89, formerly of 99th Ave West, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 in St. Eligius Health Center. She was born May 25, 1916 to Helen and Peter Raden in White Bear Lake, Minn., and grew up in Avon, Minn. She married Wilbur O. Rodenwald on Feb. 26, 1935 and they moved to Duluth in 1943. Mercedes was a homemaker and also worked at the former Peoples Hotel in Gary, Chun King, and Lake Haven Manor as a nursing assistant for seven years prior to her retirement. Mercedes enjoyed needlework and loved playing bingo. She was a long time member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Gary. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wilbur in 1960; stepfather, William Mower; infant son, Willis Rodenwald; stepsister, Muriel Heinen and a special friend, Gunder Gilbertson. She is survived by three daughters, Ruth Kuka of Duluth, Mary (John 'Jack') Shaw of Aurora, Colorado, and Sandra (Ronald) Nystrom of Cambridge, Minn; two sons, Charles (Gayle) and Kenneth (Georgia) both of Duluth; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Eligius Health Center for the wonderful care. VISITATION:5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and will continue from 12 noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home. Rev Fr. Noel Stretton officiating. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.
