Ralph was the oldest of five children born to Glenn Blenkarn Hughey and Lenora Elizabeth Hurt. He had 2 younger sisters and 2 younger brothers. He served in the U. S. Navy. He married twice. His first wife was Beverly Ann Jarstfer (daughter of Viverine Jarstfer and Berla Collins. They married in September 1950 in Battle Creek, Michigan. They had two daughters:

Ralph and Beverly divorced. They both remarried.
