Dr. John R. E. Lee, President of A. & M. College, Dies In College Hospital Of Pneumonia Attack

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Dr. John Robert Edward Lee, president of the Florida A & M College, succumbed here Thursday, April 6th, at 9:45 a. m. following a pneumonia attack which he had apparently overcome but which had left him so weakened that he was an easy prey to internal complications that set in. President Lee's fatal illness was the result of exposure on one of his missions to educational foundations and governmental organizations in the interest of the institution he had served since 1924. He had been confined to the college hospital since Sunday, March 12th.
Born in Seguin, Texas, January 26, 1870, he was undaunted by the meager educational opportunities available in his birthplace and found his way at a very early age to Bishop College, Marshall, Texas from which institution he received the A. B. degree in 1889. One of the most ardent exponents of education for his people he exemplified in his own educational progress his advocacy of continuous study. He attended the University of Chicago, summers, 1889, 1907, 1909 and 1911; University of Wisconsin, summers 1919, 1920; University of Minnesota, summers, 1926, 1928 and 1929 and Cornell University the summer of 1930. His achievements as an educator were recognized by several institutions his Alma Mater conferred the M. A. degree in 1904; Wilberforce and Howard Universities the LL.D. in 1908 and 1937, respectively.

Teaching Since 1889

Dr. Lee began his career as a teacher of Latin, Mathematics and History at his Alma Mater in 1889 and continued there until 1899. He was director of the Academic Department of Tuskegee Institute from 1899 to 1915. He was loaned to Benedict College for one year to organize the work at that institution.

From 1915 to 1921 he was the Principal of Lincoln High School, Kansas City, Mo. He interrupted his educational work to become Extension Secretary of the National Urban League in from 1921 to 1924. In 1924 he came to Florida A & M College as its fourth president and served in that capacity until his passing.

Had 8 Children

Dr. Lee married Ardella Wilson, October 1895, who passed away in 1932. This union resulted in eight children, seven of whom survive him, namely, Dr. Edward [sic] H. Lee, Tuskegee Veterans Hospital; Mrs. Birdie L. Jones, recently employed with the National Youth Administration Program; Mrs. Betty L. Norwood, teacher in public schools of Leon County; Dr. George E. Lee, pharmacist, Baltimore, Md.; Prof. John R. E. Lee., Jr., business manager, Florida A & M College; Prof. Maurice A. Lee, Rosenwald Fellow, engaged on a Reading Study; Prof. Ralph H. Lee, head of English Department, Alabama A & M; and eleven grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. David R. Hedgley, college chaplain, at 5:00 p. m. in the College Auditorium.
Internment services were held at Marshall, Texas, Monday, April 10th, at the family plot where his wife and son are buried. The final arrangements for this great educator were in keeping with his philosophy of simplicity.
The college will be under the direction of Vice President J. B. Bragg until the Board of Control appoints a successor.
