Leeds Bailey, 95, of Ontario, Oregon, passed away October 29, 2010 at an assisted living facility in Ontario.

Leeds was born in Sherwood, Oregon, on January 7, 1915, to Duane L. Bailey and Hazel Crim Bailey. Early in his life his parents moved to Harney County where he attended grade school at Catlow Valley and graduated from Crane Union High School in 1934. In the fall of 1937, Leeds enrolled at Oregon State College in Corvallis where he was a three-year letterman on the Varsity football team. Upon graduation in 1941 he entered the U.S. Naval Service Coast Guard. He earned the rank of a Second Lieutenant with an honorable discharge on September 25, 1946. On Oct. 24, 1941, he married Marie Oetjen and they moved to Ontario.

Leeds was employed with the Federal-State Extension Service as a County Extension Agent serving all of his 34 years in Malheur County. His early service as an extension agent was devoted largely to surveying land for leveling shortly after the Owyhee Irrigation Project was established in Malheur County. This contributed greatly to the development of the intensive row cropping that still exists today and has had a significant economic impact in the county for many years.

He was also instrumental in laying the groundwork for establishing various commodity organizations such as the Malheur Potato Growers Association, the Malheur Mint Growers Association and the Legume Seed Growers Association all of which became a reality through his efforts.

Leeds was a devoted husband and lived a quiet life but enjoyed the outdoors collecting specialty rocks and mushrooms. Leeds loved the open range, and the Steens Mountains. He and his wife often gave lectures about identification of mushrooms. He leaves an impressive size rock collection. He attended Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Ontario. Leeds was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, three brothers, and his parents.

He is survived by niece, Janice Bailey, Irvine, CA, sister-in-law, Rachael Bailey, Forest Grove, OR; nephews; Todd Bailey, Jr., Los Olivos, CA, Bill Bailey, Sacramento, CA, David Bailey, Corvallis, OR, and Robert Bailey, Gresham, OR. Graveside memorial services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday November 6, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Pastor Jeffrey Wilson Officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of one's choice. Services under the direction of the Ontario Lienkaemper Chapel. Condolences can be sent to the family at
