William Greenlee, the son of John Greenlee and Elizabeth Sunderland married Nancy Smith on July 25, 1849 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Nancy is likely the daughter of Moses Smith and Parthenia Miller. William applied for a Civil War pension (Union) from various places in Illinois He said his father was John Greenlee who fought with Jackson in the "War of 1812." He said he moved to Illinois after the Civil War from Grainger & Jefferson Co. TN. He says he grew up 5 mi. from Rutledge, Grainger Co. TN; He states in his application that he's not very good with dates but says that his birth date was Sept. 15, 1828, but in the 1900 Census in Randolph County, Il where he lives with his son Moses, he says he was born in October of 1828. He further stated that his middle name was "Matteson" (probably the clerk's version of "Madison.") He stated that he entered service on or about the 4th day of Aug 1863, Company G, 9th Regiment of Tennessee Art'y commanded by Gen Burnsides and was discharged at Knoxville, TN on or about 15th day of Sept 1865 by reason of disability. He served as 1st Lieutenant of Company G of the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Light Artillery Volunteers from about 5th day of Feb 1864 to the 19th day of Jan. of 1865. He was wounded in the line of duty near Knoxville, TN in 1864. He had received a gunshot wound of neck, back, and left elbow. He was treated in a Hospital at Knoxville. His pension was denied as his name was never found on the Roster of the Company he served with. He claimed to be wounded at the Battle of Knoxville. William died in St. Clair County, IL and is buried at the poor farm lot #651. His children are Presley Jane, John, Moses, Malissa, and George.
