Esther, daughter of John Wilkes and Elizabeth Hartas, was born in Farnsdale, Yorkshire, England Aug. 19, 1777. [memorial is 1787] Elizabeth Hartas was the daughter of John Hartas of Bransdale and Johanna (nee Perth) Hartas his wife.

Esther Wilkes married Solomon Hugill in Kirkdale, York, England, Feb. 11, 1800. Their marriage is listed in the Kirkdale Parish of which they are both members, "by Banns". Solomon was a son of Jno/John Hugill of Bransdale and Mary Dale daughter of William Dale of Bransdale West.

In the early 1800's, there resided in Bransdale, Yorkshire, England, Solomon, his wife Esther Wilkes Hugill and their nine children. Joseph died young and the three elder brothers and two sisters migrated to America, settling in the vicinity of Toronto, Canada leaving the younger ones, Hannah, Rachel and Charles with the parents. [All the children's christening records listed Solomon as a farmer from Bransdale, with the children being christened in the Kirkby Moorside Parish, in the County of York.]

In 1833, when Hannah was 16, they too set sail for America and after a long and stormy voyage joined the rest of the family in Markham, Ontario just outside of Toronto. Thomas, William, John and Nancy lived in Ontario the rest of their lives.

There was also living in the vicinity the Schell family, decendants of German settlers in the Mohawk Valley, New York State. Esther Hugill married Abraham Schell and moved farther west to Oxford County near the town of Ingersol. Hannah married Robert Swailes and when he died she married Henry Schell a brother of Abraham and moved to Ingersol also, taking with her the five Swailes children: Ruth, John Henry (Jack), Maryann, Harriet and Robert. Rachel Hugill who had married William Garbutt of Stuckley, England joined the sisters in Oxford County and not long after Charles who had married Mary Smith followed.

Henry Schell when he heard that some good farming land was available in Michigan decided to move there and in July 1858 with Hannah, seven children and considerable livestock, ferried across the St. Clair River, went north to Lexington where they stayed a few days with relatives and then on to Lapeer County settling about four miles east of the town of Beechville now known as North Branch.

The next year Abraham and his family came also, stopping first in Attica and then to North Branch settling west of the village in Deerfield Township. William Garbutt and Rachel stayed in Ingersol but two of their children, a son William and a daughter Mary Garbutt Chambers settled in the vicinity, William north of town and the Chambers east near the Henry Schells. Not too long after wards Charles and Mary Smith Hugill who were living in Fullarton, Ontario at the time came too. So two sisters and a brother and the children of the third sister were together.

Obituary: "Hugill, Mrs Rachel, was born in Yorkshire, England, married Solomon Hugill 63 years ago, and came to Canada in 1833 with her husband and family. She died in Fullarton Twp., Oct 20 1862; age 85; survived by her husband, several children, 51 grandchildren, amonst who is Rev. Joseph Hugill of Stratford, and 58 great grandchildren." - Christian Guardian, 4 Mar 1863, p. 39. O.
