Observer (possibly?) aboard B-17G Flying Fortress #44-8143. Note: the B-17 was assigned to the 554th Squadron.

Killed In Action on bombing mission to Berlin, Germany when his squadron were intercepted by as many as 25 to 70 enemy Me-109 and Fw-190 fighters, and was shot down and crashed one mile north of Brandenburg. Seven crew members were killed and three escaped the doomed plane and were captured and became POWs. So many bombers went down on this mission that there were few witnesses to give a post-mission account of the sequence of events. MACR 9516.
