LT EDWIN KARL NEWMAN, Class of 1939 was killed in action while serving as commander of C company, 7th Armored Infantry Battalion, 8th Armored Division during combat operations near An den Berg, near Montfort, Netherlands.
Born July 13, 1917 to Freda D. and Paul D. Newman in Franklin, North Carolina, “Benny” later moved with his parents and siblings to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He graduated from Richard J. Reynolds High School and entered The Citadel with the class of 1939 in 1935, graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 1939.
Following graduation he was employed by Duke Power company in Winston-Salem. Benny married Ms. Daisy Faircloth Groner on July 30th 1941. He received a leave of absence and entered military service January 3, 1942. He was assigned as an instructor at the Infantry School at Fort Benning Georgia before going overseas.
Benny was in command of C company, 7th Armored Infantry Battalion, 8th Armored Division when he was killed in action at 0300, February 26, 1945 as his unit was attempting to clear the Heide Woods near Montfort, Netherlands of enemy forces.
He was buried in the U.S. Military Cemetery at Margraten, Netherlands in Plot S, Row 2, Grave 27. Following the war, his widow Daisy opted to have him permanently interred in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial where he rests in peace in Plot D, Row 7, Grave 14.
He was twenty-Seven years old.
