AARSETH, John M. and Johanna by Marvel De Sordi

John M. AARSETH was born near Sabo in Hjorundfjord, Sunmore, Norway on October 24, 1879. He came to Sacred Heart, Minn. with his parents: Mathias K. and Malene AARSETH, brothers Knute and Old, and sister, Martha, on May 17, 1889. They settled on a farm in Yellow Medicine County near Echo, Minn.

John came to Carpio, N.D. in 1906 and homesteaded the NW 1/4 of Section 13, Twp. 157 (Mayland Twp.), Range 85, Ward County. He named his farm "Valley View," as it over looks the Souris River Valley. He married Johanna REKKEDAHL on January 6, 1912 in Echo, Minn. She was born January 30, 1888 in Norway and came to Echo in Sept. 1906.

The farm operation was grain and dairy farming. The first purebred holstein cattle were purchased in WWI in 1925.

John served as president of the Mayland Twp. School Board, chairman of Mayland Twp. board, and president of Foxholm Farmers Elevator board. He served as Red Cross keyman of Mayland Twp. He also served as secretary of Nazareth Lutheran Church. John died Feb. 7, 1934 and is buried in Nazareth Lutheran Cemetery, Plain Twp., Renville County, Rural Carpio, N.D.

Johanna continued to live on the farm and operate it with her brother, Ole REKKEDAHL, and her son, Arthur, until 1953 when she moved to Wash., to live with her daughters. She made three trips back to visit Norway, 1950, 1966, 1973. She died August 11, 1978 in Edmonds, Wash., and is buried in Nazareth Lutheran Cemetery.

They had five children: Marvin, Kamiilla, Marvel, Arthur, and Mabel.
