His mother's maiden name was Dulak, who was born and died in Poland. John grew up in the Polish corridor. He spoke fluent German as his schooling was in German due to the fact that Prussia controlled that part of the corridor. He liked German culture as well as his Polish heritage and served in a reserve Prussian artillery unit as a young man. He settled in the largely Polish neighborhood known as the "North End" in Toledo.
