Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Belmullet, Count Mayo, Ireland, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the War with Spain as a Sergeant on board the USS Nashville. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads "Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Gaughan set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action." His Medal of Honor was awarded to him on July 7, 1899.
