Eugene E. Lindsey, 91, formerly of Duncansville, passed away Thursday evening at Homewood at Martinsburg.

He was born in Foot of Ten, Duncansville, son of the late Tolbert Elder and Mamie G. (Smith) Lindsey. He married Lois Alrue Holsinger on July 17, 1947. She died in February 2009, following 63 years of marriage.

He is survived by a daughter, Genie and husband, Larry Hanelly, of Bellwood; and two brothers: Tolbert and Paul.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles N. "Hank" on Jan. 25, 2011.

Gene was a 1938 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School; Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in education, majoring in chemistry; and University of Pittsburgh receiving his Master's of Education in administration.

Mr. Lindsey was a well-respected educator, having retired as assistant principal in 1980 from the Hollidaysburg Area High School, after 22 years of service. Prior to that, he taught chemistry and math for seven years at Morrison Cove High School; and was co-owner of Lindsey Bus Lines.

Gene had served in the U.S. Army, WWII, serving with the 99th Chemical Warfare Unit in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and the occupation of Japan.

He was the past presiding officer of the following Masonic bodies: Juniata Lodge 282, F&AM; Mount Moriah Royal Arch Chapter; Valley of Altoona, AASR; Mountain Commandery; Mountain Council; York Rite College; Chief Logan Forest TCL; Knight Masons; Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests; and Allied Masonic Degrees. He was also a member of the Order of the Silver Trowel, and the Jaffa Shrine, Legion of Honor. Eugene received the MSA award and was coroneted a 33 in the Scottish Rite and awarded the Order of the Purple Cross in the York Rite.

Mr. Lindsey was affiliated with the Air Force Association; National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C.; lieutenant colonel, Group 1500 USAF Auxillary, Civil Air Patrol as group commander; secretary, Central Counties Football League; Aerospace Education Achievement Award; The Grover Loening Aerospace Award; the Paul E. Garber Award Certificate for Outstanding Performance; and the Gill Robb Wilson Award Certificate for Conspicuously Meritorious Service; was an instrument-rated private pilot and participated in search and rescue operations; served as a Republican committeeman; Transportation Service, Blair County EMA; and was a life member of Duncansville Post 8724, VFW. Gene proudly represented the Armed Forces in the Duncansville Memorial Day parade until the age of 90

He was a lifelong member of Hicks Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as deacon and men's Sunday school teacher and superintendent.

Gene was an avid reader of astronomy and WWII history, an animal lover and a Golden Tiger and Steelers fan.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg (www.sorgefuneralhome.com), where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hicks Memorial United Methodist Church, Duncansville, by the Rev. Rich Morris. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park with full military honors.

Memorials may be given to Hicks Memorial United Methodist Church.

Gene was a loving husband and father.
