U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1830 and practiced law for a number of years in Batavia, New York. He was the president of the Bank in Batavia and Judge of the Genesee County Court, (1841-46). In 1853, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress and reelected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1863 and appointed by President Lincoln a judge of the court of arbitration in Cape Town, Africa, under the treaty with Great Britain, for the suppression of the African slave trade during the Civil War. His last public office was as a member of the board of trustees of the State Institution for the Blind in 1873, serving until his death at age 79.
