Sara Houseman, a woman who was dedicated to her faith and raising her six children with her husband, was laid to rest Friday.
Houseman, of Alamo Township, died unexpectedly on Dec. 12. The autopsy results are pending.
Friends and family members remembered the 38-year-old as a devoted Christian and a loving mother.
"Her Christian faith was the most important thing in her life," said her father, David DeBlecourt, of Cooper Township.
Houseman attended Western Michigan University and became one of the first teachers hired at Reformed Heritage Christian School in Kalamazoo during the mid-1990s.
She went on to become a homemaker, marrying her husband, Steve, and homeschooling their six children — Michael, 12; Tommy, 10; twins Joey and Scotty, 6; Caleb, 5, and Kristin, 3.
Houseman was the kind of mother who crocheted afghans for each child's bed and made labels so everything found its place in the kitchen drawer.
She insisted her children memorize a book called "The 21 Rules of This Household." The first rule was obey the Lord.
"Her passions were family, making sure (the children) were eating healthy and learning what they should be," said Steve Houseman, 38, who works as an office administrator at a glass installation company in Kalamazoo.
The Housemans lived in a house small enough that all the children slept together in one room. But two years ago, they began a large-scale home improvement project to add three bedrooms, bathrooms, a room for homeschooling and a living room.
A week before Sara Houseman died, the family finished the living room and finally had enough space for their first full-size Christmas tree.
Now as the family copes with their loss right before the holidays, they will turn to God and rely on their faith, said friend Pam Bos.
"I know their family is going to get strength from God," said Bos, of Kalamazoo. "Steve knows that ... God's strength will sustain him and his children."
Memorial contributions can be made out to Steve Houseman and mailed to Joldersma & Klein Funeral Home, 917 S. Burdick St., Kalamazoo.
