U.S. Senator from Oregon 1879-1885. As a young man, lured by either land or gold, he led a team of oxen over mountain and plain, arriving in California in 1850, but settling in Oregon the following year. He was hired as a school teacher but he was drawn to law and in 1854 he was admitted to the bar. He served on the territorial legislature and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. In 1879 he was elected to represent Oregon in the U.S. Congress and served for 6 years.
