Retired Bank Watchman Lived Here Sixty Years
John L. Caldwell, 83 years old, retired watchman for the American Security and Trust Co., died Friday of paralysis at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. J.B. Smithson, 1209 Pennsylvania avenue southeast. He was born in Barnestown, Md., but had resided in Washington for 60 years, having married, Miss Harriet Williamson of this city in 1869.
He is survived by two sons, John L. Caldwell, jr., of this city, and Harry Caldwell of Littleton, Colo.; four daughters, Mrs. Smithson, Mrs. J.H. Lapphaer [sic], Mrs. William Umphau [sic] and Mrs. C.F. Lantz, all of this city; a brother, Clifford Caldwell, and three sisters, Mrs. L. Bradshaw, Mrs. L. Cook and Mrs. M. Stewart, all of Martinsburg, W. Va.
Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence of Mrs. Smithson by Rev. F.W. Johnson of Grace Baptist Church, followed by interment in Congressional Cemetery.
