He wrote such books as "The Stranger In Shakespeare," "Love And Death In The American Novel," "Come Back To The Raft Ag'in Huck Honey," "Return Of The Vanishing American," "Freaks: Myths And Images Of The Secret Life," "Being Busted," "An End To Innocence," "Essays In Culture And Politics," and "The Last Jew In America." Also a noted teacher, he taught at Montana State University and SUNY at Buffalo.
