U.S. Congressman. He came to the United States in 1864, studied law at Eastman College, New York, went to New Orleans, in 1869 and engaged in newspaper work until 1873. He served as collector of the Port of Natchez, by appointment of President Grant, in 1877, moved to Indiana, in 1884, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving until 1897. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in several states and finally settled in Nevada, in 1914, where he was interested in mining until his death at age 79.
