Bred in Kentucky by Coldstream Stud, Bull Lea was purchased as a yearling in 1936 by Warren Wright of Calumet Farm. An accomplished runner he set the track record for 9 furlongs in winning the 1938 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland race course.

Bull Lea is best known as one of the greatest sires in thoroughbred history. He was the leading sire in North America five times in 1947, 1948, 1949, 1952, 1953 and the leading broodmare sire in North America in 1958, 1959, 1960 & 1961. Bull Lea sired fifty-eight stakes winners. Seven Thoroughbred hall of fame members were sired by Bull Lea including the 1948 U.S. Triple Crown Champion & U.S. Horse of the Year, Citation.
