Scio- Hazel Irene Backus, 81, of Scio died Friday at Twin Oaks Care Center in Sweet Home. The daughter of Joseph and Mary (Marks) Burge, she was born and spent many years in Valentine, Neb. She lived in Montana before moving to Scio in 1976. She married Cecil House in Valentine, Neb. And they later divorced. She married Walter Backus March 18, 1949 in Valentine. He died January 1984. Mrs. Backus was a homemaker and was most interested in her family and pet and in country music and flowers. She played the organ and piano.
Survivors are daughters, Betty Biltoft of Clancy, Mont, Pat Jamison of Sweet Home and Jeanne Overman of Scio; stepdaughters, Ruth Davis of Portland and Dorothy Phillips of Richfield, Wash; stepsons, Walter Backus of Long Beach, Wash., and Wayne Backus of Phoenix, Ariz.. There are nine grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A son died in infancy.
Visiting will be 4 to 8 pm Tuesday in Houston Funeral Home, Lebanon. A graveside service will be 11 am Wednesday in Miller Cemetery in Scio. Pastor Skip Jackson will officiate.
