Born at Basin on 24 Jun 1917, he was the son of the late Henry Joe Basham and Louanna McKinney Basham.
Mr. Basham was retired from US Steel Coal Mines at the Gary Cleaning Plant with 42 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 1606.
Mr. Basham was of the Baptist faith and had made his home at Shady Spring for the past 22 years. He was a former resident of Big Sandy, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Ody, Albert, and Ralph; sisters, Brady Shrewsbury, Dessie Basham, Zida Shrewsbury, Gladys Shrewsbury, Rouvatie Haynes and Ester Basham, and Havre Shrewsbury.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Machinsky Basham; two sons, Hansel Basham Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Alexander Basham and wife, Dora, of Morgan Hill, Calif.; two daughters, Veronica Blevins of Big Sandy, and Carol Stamper of Shady Spring; a sister, Gretsel Whitt and husband, Everett, of Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services Thursday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 Honor Guard.
