He is the brother of two Cajun musician greats, Clarence Alleman and Philip Alleman. Born blind, he was encouraged to play music by his brother, the late Clarence Alleman who worked with Aldus Roger and the Lafayette Playboys. He and his brother Philip started out participating in local talent contests and rapidly started working professionally. Ellis worked the following bands: Louis Cormier and the Moonlight Playboys, Lawrence Walker and the Wandering Aces, Dalton “Black” Alleman and the Happy Playboys, Eddie Bearb and the Bristol Ramblers, and Aldus Roger and the Lafayette Playboys.
