PORT LEYDEN — Mary (Beck) Scouten, 92, widow of Wesley, a former long time resident of East Main St. and Quarry St., passed away on Friday, May 5, 2006, while under the care of Lewis County Hospice at the Lewis County Extended Care Facility in Lowville.
Mary was born in the Town of Lyonsdale on July 4, 1913, a daughter of Michael and Sarah Tuffey Beck. She grew up in the Lyons Falls area, attending Lyons Falls High School.
On August 28, 1930, Mary was united in marriage with Wesley Scouten at St. Martin's Rectory in Port Leyden. For several years, she was employed in providing adult care to local residents and through that she was able to travel throughout the United States. She enjoyed playing "pitch" and "rummy," spending time with her grandchildren, and touring the North Country in her car. Her husband, a retired woodsman, died on October 4, 1969, and after that, Mary moved from Quarry St. to her home on East Main St. where she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Glen Satterly, moving to the extended care facility in 2001.
She was a member of St. Martin's Church of Port Leyden, and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.
Mary is survived by two sons and daughters-in law, Raymond Michael Scouten and Susan, and James Howard Scouten and Nancy; and her son-in-law, Glenn Satterly, all of Port Leyden; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two daughters, Catherine Satterly, on July 1, 2001, and Margaret Mary Scouten, who died as an infant; and by two sisters, Margaret Rocker, on January 19, 2006, and Florence Anderson; and by six brothers, Walter, Martin, Harry, Donald, Gordon and Robert.
A prayer service will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St., Boonville, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Msgr. Paul E. Whitmore, to follow at 12 noon at St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours are Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
