James Norman Gridley was the son of Rev. John S. J. and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Gridley. Frances A. (Hill) Gridley was his 1st wife. They were married in 1871 and she died July 5, 1911. Emily Eliza (Collins) Brady Gridley was his 2nd wife. They were married September 3, 1915 and she died May 26, 1925.

GRIDLEY: James Norman Gridley: Noted Attorney of Illinois - died Nov. 7, 1924, aged 82. Born June 15, 1842 to John S. and Elizabeth Mitchell Gridley in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. In 1861 he entered Ypsilanti Academy then for many years practiced law in Virginia, Ill. He was Master of Chancery of his county for 26 years and chairman of the Democratic county central committee for 22 years. He published many historical sketches of Illinois and a collection of essays on the life of Abraham Lincoln. In 1871 he married Frances Hill, who died in 1911. Their eldest daughter Helen dies in 1905. He retired to California in 1911, was admitted to the bar, and during the war gave legal assistance to all who requested it. On Sept. 3, 1915 he married an old school friend, Emily Collins Brady of Pomona, and they lived at 1155 E. Ocean in Long Beach. She survives him as do his children: Charles A., Burton E. and Howard in Illinois; Harry N., in Washington, Clara in Oregon, Elmer B. and Mary in California.
