James was born in Little River, OK.
He served with the U.S. Army 45th Infantry Charlie Company during the Korean War, where he received the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal and was also awarded a Purple Heart.
Upon returning home from the war, he formed a group called the Buck Boys with his cousins, and later changed the name to the Gospel Aires. They traveled statewide to perform at revivals and singings.
He married Pat Dana in August 1963. She died in August 2005.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; brothers Benjamin Wallace McCosar Jr., Wilbur Brimer McCosar, Julius Ryan McCosar and John Robert McCosar; and a sister, Anna Mae McCosar.
Survivors include a son, John McCosar and wife, Rhonda, of the home; grandchildren, Erica, Jim Bob, Donald, Sassy and Emily, all of the home; a sister, Martha Ann Leach, Midwest City; uncle, Lewis McCosar, Holdenville; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services for James Monroe McCosar, 73, were held at Many Springs Indian Baptist Church Holdenville, OK.
