Charles R. Deck Passed Away Suddenly on Last Wednesday
Charles R. Deck, a resident of this vicinity since 1910, passed away suddenly on last Wednesday evening about ten o'clock. Mr. Deck was downtown during the day and retired quite early Wednesday evening and shortly after nine o'clock he got up from his bed and went into another room. Mrs. Deck called to him and received no answer and she immediately went to him and saw he was breathing hard. She immediately summoned aid and as soon as possible he was taken to the hospital. Upon reaching the hospital hallway he slumped down between those aiding him and passed away.
Mr. Deck had lived in the Fort Benton community since coming to the state in 1910, and about three years ago moved a residence to this city and has since lived here. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and his passing was a distinct shock to all.
Charles Ransom Deck was born at Churubusco, Indiana, on Oct. 31, 1866, and passed from this life on his birthday, being just 79 years old. He spent his early life in Indiana where he was engaged in farming. In 1883 he was united in marriage to Jennie Olive Patterson, of Churubusko, at Columbia City, Indiana. They came to Montana in 1910 and took up a homestead in the Kershaw area and farmed there until he retired and moved to Fort Benton in 1942.
He is survived by his wife and four sons and five daughters: Lura Linville, Columbia City, Indiana; Iva Longnecker, of Superior, Wis.; Harry Deck, of Bellingham, Wash., Earl Deck, of Great Falls; Hazel Parch and Claude Deck, of Portland; Charles Deck, Mrs. Irene Jackson and Mrs. Frances Lane, all of Fort Benton; and fifteen grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Cloyd chapel, conducted by the Rev. Earl G. McKnight, pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery. The relatives had the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
