John Thomas Copeland and Kate Julian were married on October 10, 1910 in Tupelo, Mississippi. In 1923, John Copeland with his family came to the Demopolis area as the Superintendent of the Cotton Mill in Shortleaf. In 1926, John Copeland opened Copeland Machine Shop on Cedar Street in Demopolis. The family lived in a home adjacent to the shop until 1956. Copeland Machine Shop was passed down to the Copeland sons Royal and Russell, and then to the sons of Russell - Jimmie and Roy.
The Copelands were members of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Copeland was a Mason.
