Newspaper "Sampson Democrat" in 1916:

"In 1869, Dr. McKinnon was married to Miss Addie Lee, and to this union four children were born. Mrs. McKinnon survives her husband, as do two of her children; Mr. Howard McKinnon, cashier of the Bank of Clinton; and Mrs. F.H. Holmes.
"Since his retirement from the presidency of Davidson, some thirty years ago, Dr. McKinnon has been a helpless invalid. He has not been able to leave his chair, and at times has been a great sufferer, yet no man went to pity who did not come away to envy. No man went into the presence of this invalid without coming away with the feeling that he had a benediction pronounced upon him. During all of these years Dr. McKinnon has kept as intelligent grasp on the affairs of the day; and maintained an unflagging interest in everything that was conceived for the betterment of his fellow man. Although unable to minister in the usual way, yet he ministered in an advisory way that was helpful to the Clinton community. Those of us who had the beautiful privilege of coming into his sacred presence from time to time will ever be uplifted when we think on the example he set"

Dr. McKinnon (Doctor of Divinity) was salutatorian in his 1861 graduating class from Davidson College and the college's first alumnus to become its president. Shortly after being elected Davidson president, Dr. McKinnon was diagnosed with "rheumatism" and tendered his resignation in 1887 thought the college did not accept it until 1888.

He served in the Confederate Army as Ordinance Sergeant then Chaplain in the 36th Regiment of NC Troops.

He was the son of Daniel McKinnon and Margaret McKay McKinnon.
